04/23/12: Monday Buyers' Notes « GreenLeaf

New this week:

  • County Line South: Organic Baby Round Carrots. 24ct pack.
  • Coke Farm: Organic Baby Artichokes and sack Chiogga Beets. The Artichokes are a 20lb pack and the Chiogga Beets are a 25lb pack.
  • Comanche Creek: Organic Snap  and English Peas and Broccoli De Ciccio. The Snap Peas and De Ciccio are a 10lb pack and the English Peas are a 25lb pack.
  • Knoll Farm: Organic Full Size Fig Leaves, and Organic Green Almonds. Sold by the pound. Also, Lemon Verbena, sold by the half pound.
  • Sweet Harvest: Organic Gold Nugget Mandarins. They will be available by the end of the week. 25lb pack.
  • Coke Strawberries are in. They are a 12x8oz pack.

Gapping or limited this week:

  • Wild Arugula is currently gapping. There is currently none available.
  • Broccolini and Snap Peas are limited from hail damage in the Salinas area 2 weeks ago. Supplies will improve by next week. We are currently filling orders.
  • Good quality Frisee is limited as Scarborough is harvesting smaller heads to avoid bolting issues. They are packing up to 16 heads per box to fill them up. The blanch is also off as the heads cannot be tied up for the usual 5-8 days. Quality may improve by May.
  • Baby Arugula and both Baby and Cello Spinach are having weather related quality issues where the leaves are turning Yellow just days after harvest and packing. We are carefully checking our lots daily to weed out the unsalable product. Quality is expected to improve this week or next as the crops will be entirely from Southern Monterey County.
  • Guatemalan grown Cantaloupes and Mexican grown Seedless Watermelons are limited this week as demand has outpaced supply. Supplies should improve this week as more areas are expected to start. Guatemalan grown Honeydew Melon supply  and prices are steady this week.
  • Lacinato Kale and Chards supplies are limited by the hot weather in the growing areas last week. We are sourcing from more Northern areas this week.
  • Celery Root and Meyer Lemons are winding down for the season and supplies may be hit or miss in the upcoming weeks.
  • Organic and conventional Baby Gold Beets are limited and subject to gapping this week. We are sourcing from both Southern and Northern California. Supplies are not expected to improve for several weeks.
  • Organic Strawberries were damaged by hail last week and are limited. Supplies will improve by May 1st.
  • Organic Peeled Baby Carrots have been gapping since the end of last week as the crop and processing has transitioned back to the Salinas Valley from Yuma Arizona. Supplies are expected to return to normal sometime this week.
  • Curry Leaves have been gapping from Hawaii since last week. We may have some by the end of this week.
  • Organic Celery Hearts, Lemons and Red Onions are all very limited and subject to gapping this week.
  • Micro Celery and Cilantro have been very limited for the last two weeks but supply should improve with the warmer weather.
  • Nantes carrots are currently gapping.
  • Petite French breakfast radishes will not be available until Thursday.

Finished for the season:

  • Ancho and Peppercress from County Line South. Next crop from Petaluma in June.
  • Organic Minneola Tangelos. Limited to stock on hand.
  • Jerusalem Artichokes have ended for the season. We are limited to stock on hand.
  • T&D Willey Farms Small loose Artichokes have ended.

Notes:

  • White Corn, Blue Lake Beans, Green Bell Peppers and Yellow Straight Neck Squash are all California grown now. Prices are up from the Mexican grown products.
  • Mexican grown Cucumbers and Eggplant supplies are limited and prices are up.
  • Mexican grown Zucchini supplies are strong and prices are down.
  • Mexican grown Red and Yellow Bell Peppers are up in price this week as supplies tighten.
  • Mexican grown Lime supplies are stronger and prices are down this week.
  • California grown Valencia Juicing Orange supplies are improving and prices are steady this week.
  • Washington grown Red Onions prices continue on the high side. Yellow Onion prices have come down a little. New crop California Onions are still a month away.
  • Washington grown Russet Potato supply and prices are steady.
  • Many crops in the Salinas Valley, San Benito and Watsonville areas were damaged by hail and high winds last week.
  • Broccoli, Cauliflower, Broccolini, Strawberries, Snap Peas, Iceberg and Leaf Lettuces, Chards and Kales are limited and prices are up.
  • Cilantro, Green and Nappa Cabbage, Celery, Italian Parsley and Leeks are all showing signs of seeder/bolting issues and prices are rising on clean lots.

APPLES – Fuji apple supply is tightening up; price went up this week as demand is heavy on all sizes. Chilean Galas are available now; California starts in July. Organic Granny Smith and Pink Lady are done for the season.

ASPARAGUS – Delta Queen will have good production this week; price will stay steady due to heavy demand for California Asparagus. Delta Queen season will run through May and Salinas through July. Washington season also has started but mainly packing 28 pounders right now. Peruvian White asparagus is available year round.

ARTICHOKES – Production is good on Medium and Large sizes; price is also down except for Small Loose, as supply remains very tight this week. We will continue sourcing different labels to cover demand.

AVOCADO – California Avocado supplies are good on both 48 and 60 count coming from the San Diego area. Avocado Pulp is available year round from Mexico.

BERRIES:

Blackberries – Price is down this week. Supply has improved in Mexico; there are at least 3-4 major growers running this week. Mexico season is expected to run until end of May then transition to Watsonville.

Blueberries – California supply has improved coming from Oxnard; price is down this week. Mexico is also available to cover shorts.

Raspberries – Price also has adjusted down this week; production is good mainly in Oxnard.

Strawberries – We are expecting to switch to Full pints by the end of this week. Berries are coming from Santa Maria and Oxnard.

Huckleberries – We have plenty of frozen Coastal variety berries on hand.

BEANS – New crop French and Yellow Wax beans are starting up in Baja Mexico this week. Dwelley Farms season will start late May normally with Yellow Wax. We are expecting Romano beans available from Coachella for 2 weeks. Iacopi has a good supply of dried Italian Butter Beans and limited Dried Gigante; both varieties are normally available year round. Cultivated Sea beans are coming in from Mexico available by 2 day pre order. English Pea supply has improved coming from Watsonville; price is expected to come off as season moves on and more labels starting up. Fava beans are coming from Fresno starting this week. Iacopi Favas are expected to start the first week of May.

BRUSSELS SPROUTS – No change; supply remains tight and expensive coming from Mexico.

CARROTS – Rainbow Carrots will gap until the second week of May; sizing from both growing areas (California and Arizona) are very small. Jumbo carrots supply is also very tight; price is up this week; we will use Arizona Carrots to cover shorts.

CHILES – All Chile varieties are grown in Mexico. California is expected to start in June. Jicama and Tomatillos has good supply also from Mexico.

CITRUS – Lemon supply remains tight coming from Central California. Grapefruit is coming from California using the Rio Red variety; season will run until September. California Navel Orange supply is tight; we already switched to using Late Lane variety this week. Kumquats are grown in the San Diego area and expected to run till June. Pixie Mandarin season is done very early this year normally they run until end of May.

CUCUMBERS – California English Cucumber is available but remains limited; we are expecting another California grower to start this week. Wilgenburg season will start in July; they planted more HEIRLOOM TOMATOES this year. Pickling Cucumbers are coming from Mexico packed in 50lb boxes. Japanese Cucumbers are available coming from the Salinas area.

GARLIC – Fresh Organic garlic and Organic whole peeled garlic are coming in from Argentina. Peeled Chopped Ginger is available coming from Hawaii packed in 12x9oz jars. Black Garlic is available from Korea; shipment arrives twice a week. Whole Peeled Pearl Onions are coming in from Idaho packed in the 4x5lb case. Fresh Shallots are available from Washington. Ginger is available coming from China almost year round.

GRAPES – Chilean season is expected to run through May then transition to California the first week of June. We also carry Black Seedless and Muscat from Chile.

HERBS – Basil, Opal Basil, Chives, Epazote, Oregano, Thyme, Tarragon, Sage and Marjoram are available with good supply coming from Mexico. Chervil will continue to come from California almost year round. Chive Blossoms are also available from Southern California and Gilroy.

MACHE – Epic Roots Mache production is coming from Salinas starting this week. Hydro Mache and Upland Cress have good supply; our shipment comes in every Thursday’s and Saturday’s late pick up at Continental Airlines.

MUSHROOMS – Hedgehogs and Black Trumpet supply is winding down; season is expected to run for another 2 weeks in Oregon. Morels remains very tight and expensive in Oregon; there are imported Morels available from Turkey. Organic Hen of the Woods is available from California almost year round. Shimeji available from China and Enoki is available from Korea. Oyster mushrooms are available from China and Organic from California; Organic Pink and Yellow Oysters are available but very limited also from California. Shiitakes mushrooms are available mainly from China; Organic Baby Shiitake are coming from Oregon available by 2 day pre order. Portobello and Portobellini are both available from California and Pennsylvania. White and Brown Mushroom are available coming from California and Canada. Alba, Brown Clamshell, Toy box, Trumpet Royale, Nebrodini and Chefs Sampler Mix are all Organic available local year round.

ONIONS – Jumbo White Onions are coming from Nevada; season is expected to run until May then transition to California. Cippolini onions are coming from Idaho and Washington available almost year round. Pearl onions are coming from Idaho also available year round. Green Onion is coming from Mexico; supply is steady this week. Ramps season will run for another 2 weeks in Michigan.

PEARS – Argentina Bartlett pears is available; season will run through April. Asian pear is coming in from Chile and should run until August. Washington Bosc pear season is done; Chile is expected to start the last week of April. Washington grown D’ Anjou and Red pears will run until June.

POTATO – Yellow Flesh Fingerling season is done. New crop Banana Fingerling is expected to start this week in Bakersfield. French Fingerling and Ruby Crescent are still available from Oregon. Purple Peruvian is available from Bakersfield. Kennebec Potatoes are coming in from the Oregon/Washington until end of May then move to Bakersfield. New crop Yukon Gold has started up in El Centro mainly “A” “B” and “CR”; Bakers are available but with limited supply; there are still few more coming from Washington to cover shorts. Bakersfield Red Potatoes are available now but color is still very light; we will stay in Washington for better quality this week. Castle Rock potatoes are available from Oregon. Winnemucca’s are coming in from Nevada. Garnet, Sweet, Jewel and Japanese Sweet are coming in from San Joaquin area.

SQUASH – Acorn, Butternut, Kabocha and Spaghetti are all coming from Mexico with limited supply. Organic Male Squash Blossoms is available now from Salinas; we will offer this by 2 day pre order and no Monday Delivery.

RHUBARB – Supply has improved from Oregon packing the field grown variety.

TOMATOES – Supply exceeds demand on all sizes and varieties; prices will stay steady this week. Grape Tomato supply is also steady coming from Mexico; Cherry Tomatoes on the other hand is tight, new field is not ready for harvest. Heirloom Tomato is available grown in Mexico.

TROPICALS – Mangos are coming in from Mexico and Guatemala using Tommy Atkins and Haden variety. Manila Mangos are also available also from Mexico. Pineapples are coming from Costa Rica, Ecuador and limited from Hawaii. Kiwi is coming in from Chile; California will start back up in September.
